Ostap Slyvynsky's lecture "A Boat of Words"

We invite you to Ostap Slyvynsky's lecture "A Boat of Words" as part of the public program for the "I Feel You" exhibition.
The event will take place on Thursday, May 2 at 19:00 in the exhibition space on the 4th floor of the PinchukArtCentre.

The international group exhibition "I Feel You" is dedicated to the ability to empathize and actualizes the question "How do our ability to empathize and the ability to listen to the stories of others change?".
During the lecture, Ostap Slyvynsky will address the linguistic aspect of empathy and will share his thoughts on how understanding the specifics of linguistic features can contribute to the formation of a space of mutual understanding and a more sensitive environment.
● Why don't we exist outside the narrative? How does a story create an individual and a community?● How does language change under the influence of trauma? How can familiar words unwittingly cause pain, and others - unexpectedly add strength?● How to accept someone else's silence? And when does it help, and when does it harm?● What does it mean to "speak through trauma"? And how to explain your pain to others? How do we translate it into the language of communities that haven't experienced trauma commensurate with ours, or have experienced it a long time ago?
Ostap Slyvynsky is a poet, translator, essayist, and literary critic. The author of five poetry collections in Ukrainian, ten collections were translated into foreign languages. Author of the idea and compiler of the literary and documentary book "Dictionary of War" (2023). He translates fiction and scientific literature from English, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, and Polish. Received several literary and translation awards, including the Award of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Ukraine for the best translation of the year from the Polish language (2007), the Hubert Burda Award for young poets from Eastern and Central Europe (2009), a special distinction of the Lviv Award - UNESCO City of Literature (2020). The compiler of the bilingual Ukrainian-Bulgarian anthology "Ukrainian Poetic Avant-Garde" (2018), the anthology of contemporary essays "Titanic Ark". 20 essays about the humanity of the 2020 model" (2020), the collection "Between the Sirens. New poems of war" (2023). Initiator and curator of the festival workshop for young authors "Registrations".Lecturer at the Ukrainian Catholic University, researcher of the history of literature of Central-Eastern Europe of the 20th and 21st centuries.
